California State Historical Landmarks: Listed by County

In 1895, official recognition of historical sites began in Los Angeles under the formation of the Landmarks Club. In 1902, the California Historical Landmarks League in San Francisco, joined the cause to preserve the state’s history. However, it wasn’t until 1932, when the official state mandated organization first designated 20 sites as historical landmarks. Over the next few decades, changes and growth were experienced. It wasn’t until 1974 that the state legislation changed the name to State Historical Resources Commission. Nowadays, the commission falls under the supervision of California Department Parks and Rec.
